The Rainbow House & Rancho De Colores

Homeowner: Patrick Hasson

Occupation: Artist

Home Location: Joshua Tree, CA

Patrick was living in LA and working as an editor for independent films while trying to make it big as a filmmaker. He was unhappily living in his apartment, without any real prospects for his future or his career. Unfilled  and unhappy he decided to make a big change and that started with home ownership. Buying in LA was untenable so he started looking for property in Joshua Tree. He found a run-down, mess of a house that was only $73,000 and he decided to buy it and make it his own. It was a drastic life change, but he knew that staying in LA was a dead end so he left his friends, his career and everything familiar to start a new life in Joshua Tree. It was then that everything changed for the better…

The first property he bought in Joshua Tree was Rancho De Colores. Once he purchased his home he began to paint as a form of self-expression and as a way to rehab the derelict property. Patrick hadn't painted since he was 20 but it brought him a new sense of joy to his life and he just continued to follow that pull in his heart. It was painting that transformed Patrick’s life. He was a home owner, he started making money, he was happier, he was healthier. And it all had to do with taking a risk and expressing himself! Patrick had his first art show at 44, and headed into a new career path as an artist. During this time Patrick bought a second home, which is now the Rainbow house where he currently lives. Rancho De Coloroes is the predecessor of the Rainbow house that helped set the stage for what would become the Rainbow house. Today RDC is a second home and retreat for Patrick as well as a rental property.

The Rainbow house came to be during the pandemic when Patrick was no longer at Rancho De Colores and he needed an outlet to express himself. Inspired by the color wheel and the naturally occurring rainbows in Joshua Tree began to paint! And paint…and paint…and ultimately found himself turning everything into rainbows. He did it all himself which was a major feat, that took him countless hours and headaches. Trying to keep his cats out of the way was also tricky!  Patrick literally found the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. By following his heart, expressing himself through his home, he’s been able to build the life of his dreams.

  • The Rainbow House features an entire property with floor to ceiling rainbows, all hand painted by Patrick. He even made his own Rainbow out-house surrounded by a Rainbow fence!

  • He even has a brightly covered rainbow themed RV that he painted!

  • Patrick believes that adding color to something can completely transform it in a beautiful way. He will paint anything he can touch! He's painted trucks/vehicles, tables, pools, refrigerators, and RVs. You name, he’ll paint it! Including clothing! Friends love to receive original clothing artwork made by Patrick.

  • He describes his rainbow aesthetic and process "vicious color" because of the energy it has and how it has completely taken over.

  • Patrick has also created all of the art that fills both of the homes as well. He went out and purchased canvas and uses house paint to drip on the canvas and manipulate with nails.
