The Momager

When most people see Sky and Skylar out and about in the world, they think they’re seeing a pair of sisters…This mom and daughter have an insanely close relationship. They pray and meditate together. They get Botox together. They even get vaginal steaming done together. If one does it, the other does it too! Because mom spends so much time with Skylar, people are surprised to learn that she has three other children! The eldest, Deonna, is 28, and often gets forgotten from the duo’s life!

Years ago, Sky found herself on the brink of stardom, picked to be a singer in the now-defunct girl group “Hot Commodity.” Sky was living in Mississippi at the time and moved to Atlanta to pursue her dreams. That meant that she left her three daughters to be raised by her mother and her aunt. When she was torn between following her dreams or raising her daughters, she prioritized herself. Sky reminisces on opening for Snoop Dogg and suspects that the other girls in the group were jealous that she was personally selected to join the group. Sadly, the group faded and never rose to the level of success that Sky hope that it would.

Because Sky wasn’t able to achieve her dreams, she’s doing everything that she can to make sure that Skylar achieves hers instead. Skylar is pursuing music, and Sky is pushing her daughter to succeed. Family members cast doubt on the situation, asking “is this Skylar’s dream or is the mom’s unrealized and unlived dreams?” Now that Sky is older, she has realized that she negatively hurt her oldest two daughters when she abandoned them years ago. There’s not a day that goes by that she doesn’t feel guilty for leaving them. She is trying to make up for lost time and is begging for forgiveness. But is it too little too late?

Sky, certain that Skylar is the next big thing, is constantly hidden in the wings, puppeteering even the most minute details of Sky’s career. Yes, Sky choreographs all of Skylar’s performances, but she also decides literally everything else in Skylar’s life. From whether Skylar wears her hair up or down in a performance to picking how many buttons are buttoned up on Skylar’s costume, Sky takes the word “momager” to new heights. Not only that, but the two are also business owners; they run a lash extension company together.

Sky is thrilled by the promise of a music career, but she always wants to live the life of a young person. She wants to date. She wants to go out. She wants to make mistakes. But the life that mom has planned doesn’t allow room for “distractions.” Sky wants and needs a break and isn’t sure she’s willing to make all the sacrifices that her mom wants her to make, which once again begs the question, who’s dream is this, really?

In an attempt to make peace with her other two daughters who are grown and live in the Delta of Mississippi, Sky and Skylar want to go back home and extend an olive branch. They want to heal old wounds and get back to their family roots. Sky has nearly a dozen aunts and uncles and almost fifty cousins, so going back home would be a HUGE family affair. And because they are glamourous divas, they stick out like a sore thumb during a family get together in the rural Mississippi delta!

Sky wants to get married by next year but Skylar doesn’t like or approve of this goal for mama. She thinks that Mom is too immature, too picky, and too much of a perfectionist to find a real and grounded relationship. She thinks that Mom’s tastes are superficial and not based on real values. When it comes to love, mom is the immature hopeless romantic. It’s Skylar trying to educate and protect her mom’s heart.
