Maggie and Miguel are not in the market for your average beach house. And that’s because they’re not your average couple, Miguel is the captain of a deep sea crabbing vessel and Maggie is a journalist for a radio station located on a remote island in Alaska! Having adventured together between Alaska, Washington, and Mexico over their 15-year relationship, these two are finally ready to put down roots… but without sacrificing their adventurous lifestyle! Their desire to settle down is due, in no small part, to the introduction of their son, Gus, two years ago. While some new parents might aspire to settle in an ever-sunny, cookie-cutter beach town, these two are in search of something that feels like a fit for their adventurous, nautical lifestyle.

Currently based in Portland, OR, they love the diversity and culture the city offers but are less than thrilled about the lack of yard space, the congestion, and the two-hour drive to the coast. Miguel, having collectively spent years at sea, values the freedom that comes with ocean access and is drawn to communities with a strong maritime tradition. Similarly, Maggie is attracted to areas with a strong sense of community, opportunities for exploration, and dramatic natural beauty. She especially loves watching a rainstorm from a cozy couch beside a crackling fire. While Portland satisfies many of their intellectual and social needs, they hope their new home will offer that and also give their son the chance to grow up in a more localized, rural environment.

The couple is excited to explore Astoria, which is a coastal Oregon town known for its affordability, strong local culture, and ocean access. For them, it’s less about luxury and more about finding a place with heart, and in their budget! They’re drawn to homes that feel lived in and loved, bonus points for any maritime touches like lighthouses or nautical designs, which incidentally echo Miguel’s colorful tattoos and represent landmarks of their love story.

Maggie is focused on finding a cozy, functional space with room to work remotely and relax, while Miguel is dreaming of a place that feels like a retreat: something open, near the water, and low-maintenance for Maggie when he’s away at sea. He might want a little more character and nautical flair, while Maggie is more pragmatic and modern in her taste. She is open to something that is more of a fixer upper and Miguel does NOT want to do any work. He works ENOUGH and doesn’t need more manual labour in his life!

Finding the right beach house at an affordable price is their biggest challenge. They’re balancing the realities of remote work, fishing seasons, and raising a young child, all while trying to stay within a $500,000 or less budget. But for them, this home isn’t just a property  it’s a symbol of stability, connection, and the next chapter in their adventurous love story. Whether it's a fixer-upper with good bones or a quirky beach bungalow with stories to tell, Maggie and Miguel are ready to dive in and make it their own.
