The Prodigal Princess
Jade is the prodigal daughter, and granddaughter of this family of incredibly strong and intensely close women. Jade was an only child who was raised by her mother Leslie. Leslie was in turn also an only child raised by her mother, Sharon. “Ms. Sharon” as they address her, raised her daughter Leslie with every perk and privilege imaginable, doting and tending to her every whim. It’s not surprising to then learn that Leslie raised her daughter, Jade in very much the same way! All three women are alpha-female with rigid standards for everything in life. From dating, to dust-on-the-shelf, to a way a woman carries herself… But it’s not all seriousness, as the three women are absolutely hysterical, over-the-top and spend more time giggling than most other mother and daughter duos. Although, grandmother Sharon lives in Knoxville, TN, she visits Texas often to be closer to the most important women in her life. To see the three together is to witness a tempest of electric estrogen and jaw-dropping enmeshment.
At their home in Dallas, it is second nature for Jade and Leslie to be together every minute of every day. They contend that they haven’t been apart for over an hour in months! Leslie and Jade even sleep in the same bed together. Upon waking up, Leslie has to rub Jade's back and sing her a song to greet the coming morning. Leslie will then serve Jade a glass of ice water, carefully holding the rim to her daughter’s lips so she can drink without using her hands. At night, Leslie will bring Jade fruit and feed it to her in bed. When it comes to their appearance, it isn't uncommon for Leslie and Jade to wear matching outfits. They have a flair for style and love bold patterns and bright colors! Luckily, they wear the same shoe size, so the duo loves to share shoes. Leslie tries to get Jade to spend more time in the sun so their skin tones can be exactly the same and they can use the same shade of foundation. Leslie has gone as far as to wax off part of Jade's eyebrows off so they can have identical eyebrows. Leslie wants her and Jade to be as identical as possible!
When Jade was a teenager, she was so scared of "shaving her vagina off" that she made her mom shave for her. Today, Leslie continues to shave Jade's legs and even tends to her daughter's bikini line with Nair to remove unwanted hair. When Jade got her first job making deliveries, Leslie would join her daughter on her shifts because she didn't want her to be alone. In fact, Leslie refuses to drive her own car and will only drive Jade's car.
Not everyone is as big as a fan of their relationship however. Soon after Jade was born, Leslie's husband, Ryan, realized he was going to be "outnumbered" by his wife and daughter. Ryan tried to put up a fight in his house and is always taken down by Leslie and Jade's dynamic "veto" power. Ryan has felt like he is the "odd man out" as a result of Leslie and Jade's unbreakable bond and is unhappy that he is often second fiddle to his wife and daughter.
There is a huge life change on the horizon for Jade and Leslie. Jade is going away to college! She is moving into the dorm August 22nd. Jade is starting at The University of Texas, Austin which is a two-and-a-half-hour drive from Leslie and Jade's home in Dallas. Tensions are high for Leslie and Ms. Sharon as their princess is leaving home. Although Leslie knows that it’s time for her daughter to move on to the next chapter in her life, she’s having an impossibly hard time accepting that Jade won’t be around 24/7. But she has a plan…
Since Leslie is going to be doing her work remotely for the fall semester, she is making plans to split her time between to Austin and Dallas so that she can spend more time with her daughter. Leslie is also planning to enroll at the university so she can finish her doctorate degree, so the two can go to school together! Matching school outfits, matching stationary and mom and matching daughter students! They may even have Jade rush mom’s same sorority! Ryan was looking forward to finally having time alone with Leslie and getting to enjoy being "empty nesters.” Ryan feels that Jade needs some healthy separation from her mother and needs to learn how to be her own person. Leslie going to school with Jade will only stifle their daughter’s develop on her own.
Besides school, Leslie believes that it’s never too early to think about her daughter’s romantic future. Leslie has never liked any of the men that Jade has dated. They are either too good looking without substance or too serious and boring without any personality. Jade admits that she has a bad picker when it comes to men, and isn’t the best at interpreting a proper match.
Leslie thinks that an "arranged marriage" is the perfect solution to their problem. What better person to pick the person that Jade should be with than her mother? The woman who knows her better than she knows herself! Jade is more than happy to relinquish control of her dating life to her mother and is willing to let her mom pick out who she dates and ultimately marries. Leslie has no problem speaking to other mothers about their eligible sons or even approaching men on the street to see if that random strange might be Mr. Right! Jade knows that whoever she winds up with will have to be approved by her mother and she trusts Leslie to pick "Mr. Right.”
With college and a move on the horizon, this impasse will test Leslie and Jade in a way that they have yet to experience. Will Leslie be able to allow her daughter’s freedom to grow? Will Jade be able to truly flourish without her mother’s constant support? How will husband Ryan fit into the equation and get his needs met? And how will the matriarch, Ms. Sharon advise and handle this momentous chapter in their book of life?
