RESTORATION NEEDS

1. First Floor

2. Basement

3. Second Floor

  • At eleven years old, young Adam remembers riding his bike past a gorgeous, Italian Renaissance home and thought, "one day this will be my house.” Adam is now living his dream and living in that house, in the same neighborhood where he was raised. His parents, sister and brother all live in historic homes (that all need work!) within a two block radius of each other in the historic Boston Edison neighborhood of Detroit.

  • Krystle is a clinical psychologist and Adam is a 1st Lieutenant in the Army Reserves and a State Senator.

  • Adam was raised in a very “hands on” family and therefore bought his historic home intending to do the majority of the work himself. However, it’s ten years later and the majority of the projects are still incomplete. Krystle is frustrated that Adam doesn’t hire professionals and that with his busy work schedule, very little is accomplished on the home ten years later.

  • They have daughter Lilly (two years old) and want to expand their family in the near future.

  • The entire home has issues. They are currently fixing their flat, leaking roof and dealing with water damage from a storm. The home has holes in the walls, issues with plaster and water damage. Very few spaces throughout the house do not need some kind of attention.

  • The First Floor: The living room, dining room, kitchen and entry way of the first floor needs plenty of work. There are holes throughout the home where Adam tried to fix the electrical but didn’t repair the wall. The floors need to be restored throughout. The tiling in the kitchen is mismatched, broken and needs to be replaced. There is water damage throughout the ceilings and parts of the crown molding need to be replaced. The first floor also needs new paint and needs decorative plaster to be fixed and replaced.

  • The Basement: The entry way to the basement looks as though you’re entering a construction site. Leading down into the basement is an unfinished staircase with two different paint colors. The large basement area, approximately, 1,000 square feet, holds plenty of potential for entertaining guests and for functional spaces for their family. However, due to flooding/water damage, exposed wires, and unfinished projects, the basement is far from usable. The unfinished projects and spaces in the basement consist of:

  • A bar/entertaining space: They have started a bar and entertaining space but it’s not complete. There are exposed fixtures and electrical, half done tiling and the cabinets need to be finished and installed.

  • Game room/entertaining space: There is an entertainment room large enough for family and friends but it’s not suitable for people as it has water damage, exposed ceiling and needs to be painted.

  • Basement bathroom The entire basement bathroom needs attention.

  • Other rooms in the basement also need attention such as Adam’s martial arts Dojo space and the families’ laundry room.

  • The Second Floor: Although they have plenty of square footage in their home, the layout of the rooms is extremely problematic and non-functional, especially on the second floor. The rooms all are too small, have water damage, need painting, repairs on the plaster and crown molding and have issues with the hard wood floors.

  • Layout: The layout of the second floor is confusing, too small and problematic. They currently have a bedroom space for their daughter Lily, but they do not have a functional space for a future child.

  • Master Suite/Nursery: Ultimately Krystle and Adam want to re-configure the layout of the second floor to create a master-suite for mom and dad and convert or combine one or two of the rooms into a nursery for a future child.

  • Because Adam is often busy at work or away from home serving in the Army reserves, he has very little time to devote to repairing his home. He is often forced to choose between spending what little free time he does have between his family or the house—or last option: don’t sleep at all and work when everyone else is asleep.

  • Krystle and Adam want to have another child, but because of concerns of raising a baby in a construction site, lead paint, as well as a not having the space, they can’t expand their family with the house as is.

  • They desperately need help and expertise as Adam doesn’t know what he’s doing to make the home historically accurate, nor does he have the time to do the work himself. The house is in disarray and Krystle doesn’t want to live like this for another ten years.

  • The couple wants to finish the work before their "Ten year house-averssary" in May 2020. They feel like the 10th anniversary of their purchase of the house is the perfect time to host a huge party with all of their friends and family to show off their beautiful, restored home.
