Jackie and David feel like they were born in the wrong era. Jackie loves Doris Day and David loves Dean Martin. The couple have always loved the architecture of the 1950s/1960s and closed on this gem of a mid-century home in February of 2019.
Jackie and David's four kids love the new family home! Courtney (25), Nicole (22), Kyle (20) and Alex (17) all live with mom and dad in their work-in-progress house.
Though Jackie and David love their mid-century modern home, they want to restore it to their natural "swinging 50s" Mad-Men style home. As of now, it’s lost its charm. It looks and feels run down, dated and unfinished.
Jackie and David know the original owners of the home who have shared stories and photographs of the house when they lived in it.
The house was photographed to be featured in “Better Homes and Gardens” in the late 1950’s but the owners at the time decided not to proceed with the magazine spread. However, the photos from the photoshoot still exist! Jackie and David use these high quality photos of the original home as well as stories from the original owners to inform and inspire their historic restoration.
In the 1990s the second owners of the home made some updates to the home that compromised the original charm, mid-century aesthetic and integrity of the home. Jackie and David are committed to doing what it takes to bring their home back to its glory!
The Family Room: The family room is the room with the most potential, however, it’s also the room that needs the most work. There are no blinds on the windows. There is an exposed wall and there’s a literal hole in the floor. Unfortunately, this room is where they tend to spend the most time as a family.
The room has a stone fireplace that Jackie and David want to have restored, since the second owners of the home ripped out the original stone and replaced it with, "ugly, boring stone" according to David. The couple wants to find the source of the original stone but they can’t track it down. Not having the right stone stalls all the other repairs in the space, such as fixing the flooring and the paneling.
There is a pass-through window between the kitchen and the family room that is currently covered that they want to restore and re-finish.
Jackie and David want room in the family room to work since they both work from home.
The room is in desperate need of new flooring, new paneling, woodwork on their ceiling beams and new Tambour doors. There’s also a strange, sticky red substance coating their paneling!
The Kitchen: The kitchen is a "total gut" job and Jackie is ready to have the kitchen of her dreams, however, after large price tag repairs such as a sinking driveway and foundation problems, they’re not sure if they have the money to get the kitchen where it needs to be. The kitchen was poorly and cheaply remodeled in the 1990’s. It’s unattractive and non-functional. Jackie can barely open her oven without hitting a cabinet. She is beyond ready to have updated appliances, cabinets and countertops to be able to prepare her famous feasts for her family!
Entrances: The entrances of the house are at the top of David's list. The front and back entrances require new flooring and Jackie would love it if the front and back door matched. As of now, the doors look like they’re from the 90’s and are in stark contrast to the mid-century aesthetic. The couple has been on the hunt for the perfect mid-century modern doors but to no avail.
Stairway railing: The basement stairway has a fun, and funky retro railing that they want to match and re-produce throughout the home but they haven’t’ been able to find an artisan to take on the project.
The couple are on the same page about wanting to restore their home to its original state. It is important to them that they "right the wrongs" of the second owner of the home and preserve the charm and character of their home.
David and Jackie admit that they need an expert to help them navigate their home restoration because they feel "paralyzed" about making historically accurate choices. Additionally, they’re having a difficult time finding the right contractor to take on the project. They don’t want to live in a construction site forever and need help.
