The European Rococo Fantasy

Homeowner: Katerina Vanderham

Occupation: Publisher

Home Location: los angeles

Katerina is a successful publisher and former actress. Now, Katerina has moved out of full time acting and created a successful beauty and lifestyle magazine called Viva Glam. While Katerina found fame and fortune in Los Angeles, it was far from her humble beginnings in Czechoslovakia. As a child in the small European country now known as Slovakia, Katerina was very poor and often had no food, heat, or clean water. Her small home was barely furnished, and had only the very bare minimum in terms of décor. To entertain herself, Katerina would wander the countryside, which was filled with large castles and estates. Katerina would either officially tour the estates, or occasionally look into the windows and admire the lavish décor, wallpaper, and flowers. She would dream about someday having a better life and owning her own gorgeous property. Once she arrived in Los Angeles, she purchased a home that reminded her of the old estates and she began remodeling... As she painted and wallpapered, Katerina always held onto the memories of the castles and estates she used to visit, and so she designed her home to match. Now, Katerina owns an incredible estate in the heart of Los Angeles, with each room having a different theme and being a nod to the grandeur of the castles and estates that she used to visit and dream of one day owning. She has truly built her dream home, and when she visits Slovakia to see family, she is proud to show them the photos of what she built and the dream she achieved.

The European home is truly a dream home, that evokes memories of the renaissance, and reminds the visitor of famous European estates like Versailles, Buckingham Palace, or even Downton Abbey!  While it is not as large as those castles, the interior has a distinct vibe that makes the visitor feel as though they just stepped into the Tudors or into the home of a European Earl. Without her humble beginnings, Katerina says she would never have appreciated the property the way she does now, and she is proud to bring visitors to share her dream with them.

  • Inspired by the lavish style of old estates, the house is decorated with antique furniture that is purposely styled to look like the Queen’s estate or an old sitting room where one would have tea while dressed in a corset!

  • Each room in the house has a unique set of curtains that maintain the old-worldly feel and allows for lots of light when desired, or complete privacy when closed.

  • In addition to the antique furniture, the home is decorated using both fresh and fake flowers, which give it a very English vibe.

  • One of the most unique elements that give the home its antique European vibe are the candelabras that are in each room. Some hang on the walls, and others are perfectly positioned on the table. One can almost imagine a dinner party ending in the parlor to the quiet candle light that was famous to the 1900s.

  • Katerina loves the unique beds that are in each room, as each has an antique headboard that is both beautiful and lavish, and very much the opposite of the simple bed she grew up with as a child.

  • In addition to being decorated with antique furniture, each room of the house has a different color theme, and features unique artwork that reflects the lavish days of the renaissance.
