The Golden Boy

Eileen is the matriarch of the Garcia family: A loud, inappropriate, hilarious and tight-knit Puerto Rican family hailing from the Bronx. Like a true-life sitcom, mama knew that the big city wasn’t a way to raise her FIVE sons, so she and her husband moved to greener pastures for a better life. Quite literally. What is this street-slanging, unfiltered Latino family doing in a place like rural Wisconsin? Although they don’t camp, hunt or fish, they’re here for it all!

Eileen grew up the wild child daughter of a conservative preacher. She and the rest of her family are still very religious despite having the occasional margarita and expletive. Eileen has always prioritized her boys. She was a proud mama to all her young men, but it wasn’t until she met her son-in-law Mayson, did she know the special bond of a mother-in-law and a son-in-law. Four nights of the week you’ll find this inseparable duo living under the same roof! Eileen, her son Adrien, and his husband Mayson are so joined at the hip that they even work together as CNAs at the same assisted living center. These three not only work together, but after a long shift, mom comes back to her son’s house, greeted at the door with a fresh tequila sunrise that Mayson whipped up for just the two of them. Adrien and Eileen were a dynamic duo before Mayson came on the scene and Adrien will sometimes remind them, “okay b!t$h I was here first!”

The boundaries between Mayson and Eileen are essentially non-existent. Everything and anything is on the table! Not only will Eileen come in and pee while Mayson is in the shower, but when Mayson had a medical concern regarding his man-hood “downstairs” there were no qualms with a FaceTime diagnosis from Eileen! Yes, that’s right, Mayson Facetimed his mother-in-law to show her his testicles to make sure that they were not disproportionate.

Speaking of awkward, as a newly married couple Adrien wants to “get to it” in the bedroom with his husband, a really awkward thing to do when mom is sleeping right-outside his room listening. She’s doesn’t mind though. She’s even purchased lube for her son and son-in-law! Yikes. With Eileen crashing for most of the week, she has wiggled her way in as roommate with the young married couple. Meals, laundry, and tidying up are all taken care of having her in the home. Where Mayson absolutely loves the attention, and being taken care of, Adrien wants space with his new husband!

It’s not just Adrien who gets upset with Mayson and Eileen’s close-knit bond. Adrien’s younger brother, (Aaron) and his girlfriend (Deanna) also play second and third fiddle to the “Golden Boy” of the family. Aaron and Adrien have always been competitive in life, whether in sports or earning money, there has always been a rivalry. They’ve also been competitive regarding their closeness with their mom, each believing that they are mom’s “favorite.” During the holidays, they try to one up each other with extravagant gifts for Eileen. But the truth is Eileen has a very special place in her heart for Mayson, and it’s something that neither of them don’t and can’t have.

The entire Garcia family would agree that Eileen spoils, babies, dotes on and plays favorite with her son-in-law. She cooks Mayson special meals that she would never cook for the rest of her children. She goes out of her way to clean and do Mayson’s laundry, including his underwear! She’ll always answer Mayson’s phone call but won’t answer Deanna’s phone calls or requests from Deanna for a sleep over or quality time. Last year, there was a big family upset when Eileen bought Mayson a special, expensive pair of boots that she would never buy for any of her own children. It’s pretty clear that Eileen feels very strongly for adorable, Mayson.

Why? The consensus is that mom always wanted boys, and while she is close with her sons, Mayson can be both a feminine, daughter-like figure in her life, as well as a son. He can transition into the guy group but will gossip like a sister and best-friend when it’s just Eileen. What’s more, Mayson is always cheerful, whereas Adrien can be grumpy, moody, and jealous. Mayson makes it very easy for Eileen to be a close friend to.

Adrien, Mayson, and Eileen have started a small family business called, “I’ll Make It Happen” based on Eileen’s favorite saying. Adrien started the company after putting together a balloon decoration for a friend’s birthday. Adrien oversees the decorating and planning; Mayson helps coordinate with the clients and Eileen makes homemade food and pastries. Adrien needs help from both his mom and husband if this business is to get off the ground, but when his mom and husband are constantly giggling, gossiping, and not working, it’s nearly impossible to make things happen. Although this company is Adrien’s dream for him and his husband because his mom cooks, she needs to be involved. He’s not sure who this company belongs to anymore: him and Mayson, or Mayson and his mother?

Mayson and Adrien met when they were Freshman in high school before they had even come out as gay. In fact, they both had girlfriends at the time. They both came out together at 16/17 years old and Eileen’s outgoing and warm personality made Mayson feel blessed and comfortable enough to fully embrace himself. Mayson’s mother was not as accepting, so Eileen has become like a mother to him, instilling her wisdom as the matriarch of the family. This is something that Mayson’s mother isn’t thrilled about as she tries to reengage in Mayson’s life.

Although Adrien and Mayson are very much in love and are happy, they do have their share of problems. Adrien and Mayson are each other’s firsts. First kiss, first boyfriend, first coming out experience. Neither has been with any other men (or women) for that matter. As new to the LGBTQ community, they’ve never been to a pride festival and have only been to one gay bar in their life. Part of the reason is that there isn’t much in West Bend, WI, but the other reason is that Adrien is extremely jealous. Seeing Mayson talk to or flirt with someone else would make Adrien’s Latino blood boil. Firstly, this is both of their FIRST and only serious relationships. As much as they are in the honey moon phase, real life is going to hit sooner than later. And as a young, attractive gay couple, jealously is going to turn up in their relationship. Adrien has already admitted multiple times that he is a “jealous b!itc$” and that if Mayson is talking to or getting attention from men, he sees red. You can imagine how he then reacts when Mayson gets special attention from HIS mother, the mom he is supposed to be getting the special attention from.

Additionally, Adrien has taken it upon himself to move his younger, 18-year-old brother in with him and Mayson. Adrien is almost like a second mom in his family, and moved his younger brother in to essentially mold him into a bright and successful young man. The younger brother came to Adrien asking how he can have a full-time job, buy his own home, have a stable relationship. Adrien promised to help him achieve his goals, IF he moved in and IF he obeyed his rules. Adrien has many rules, NO girlfriends coming and going. No staying out late. He even gives Adrien half of his pay check… So, now with having Eileen AND the younger brother at their home, there is little to no time for Mayson and Adrien to be a young couple. They have zero privacy and haven’t been on a date in six months.

The latest news is that Mayson is going part time at his caretaking job and will be going to nursing school full-time, which means that Adrien will be the primary earner of their household. This means that Mayson and Adrien’s life is going to get much busier and more chaotic as they work to “level up” their lives.

In terms of their event planning business, Adrien, Eileen and Mayson have their first major event coming up: a full-on wedding that they are helping to plan, decorate and provide desserts for. It’s a major opportunity for them. They eventually want to quit their healthcare jobs and focus on their business fulltime, they just aren’t at the point to do so. The three of them are planning to grow their business together as much as possible.

Adrien and Mayson’s dream is to quit their jobs and do the event planning business full-time. Adrien and Mayson also want to be the first people in their family to own property. They need Eileen’s help in order to make these dreams happen. However, Adrien is getting more than he bargained for when he involves his husband and mother… Their relationship is so close, that it can’t be controlled in the way that Adrien likes and is used to controlling everything and everyone. Mayson is constantly caught between his husband and his mother in-law. Adrien has BIG plans for everyone in the family, but if Adrien doesn’t get his way, it’s bad news for Eileen and Mayson.

The season arc is following Mayson, Eileen and Adrien as they try to achieve their list of major life goals: a BIG event that could make or break their event planning company, buying their first property, raising the youngest brother/son…ALL while trying to work together, and not let jealously over Eileen and Mayson’s closeness get in the way of the shared goals. Between navigating work, career, passion projects, new marriages, parenting and internal family drama and gossip, the Garcia’s have PLENTY for viewers to tune in to!
