My Psychic Mama

Martinez, California… a charming and picturesque city nuzzled in the heart of the San Francisco Bay area, and home to a supernaturally close mother and daughter duo. Many mothers and daughters are connected in the physical world, but this duo transcends into the meta-physical. From an early age mama Becky knew that she had extra sensory powers. Described as intuition, she’s able to feel, sense and communicate with her daughter on a level that others fail to comprehend. They have their skeptics (including their family and friends) but to this “out-there” and tightknit duo, their abilities are simply unique gifts that make them special.

As a young girl (even at three years old!) Ashley had experiences that couldn’t be explained. She has story upon story of hearing voices, seeing visions of people, and gut feelings that could only be chalked up to psychic abilities. Not wanting to scare, impact or influence her daughter in a negative way, Becky kept her own abilities a secret. It wasn’t until both women were adults that they confided in one another about their shared, other-worldly powers. Mom and daughter are not professional psychics, but they firmly believe that they have abilities that can’t be explained away. They can feel each other’s emotions, read one another’s mind, and can sense incidents about to transpire. Mom even has the ability to remote view lost items in one another’s households. Because many scoff at their so-called abilities they’re careful who they admit this to and choose to keep it on a “need to know basis.” Why invite the skepticism of those who can’t understand?

Becky was adopted and never felt like she looked or acted like any of her family growing up, so Ashley has always been her mini me. Ashley is the first person in the world to look like her. With that has come extreme closeness. But today, the tables have turned. Becky is a loving mother and doting grandmother, but it is Ashley, the daughter who is overbearing, controlling, and unequally obsessed with her mother. Ashley is a worrier about anything and everything, but especially when it comes to her mother. Her mantra with her mama is, “what if?” She constantly calls, texts, and checks in on her mom. It’s gotten so bad that Becky will lie and keep her plans a secret from her daughter so that her daughter doesn’t worry about her. Ashley feels like her mother is the only person in her life that completely understands and accepts her and fills the role of friend, companion, and family all in one.

Ashley’s greatest fear in life is the eventual passing of her mother. She can’t bear to think of a world without her, and therefore does everything in her power to protect her mother while they live on this physical plane of existence. Becky, although she loves her daughter’s attention, knows that it isn’t healthy for her to be so dependent, especially at 34 years old. She needs to be her own source of support and inner strength. The day will come when they aren’t together, and Ashley needs to be ready for that. Not just for herself, but for her husband and her children.

Ashely is currently married to her hunk of a husband Matt and the couple has two children together, twins Matt and Madden age six. Ashley also has an older son named Zach from a previous relationship with a man named Phil. Phil and Ashley were never married but they remain the best of friends and co-parents to this day. It’s untraditional and complicated but they do their best to keep their family happy and on the same page. Mom is married to Ty. He is Ashley’s stepfather, but Ashley regards him as dad. Ashley has another sister named Brittany who is 32. Mom is currently rebuilding a relationship with her, but Ashley and Brittany detest one another. According to Ashley, Brittany has done unspeakable things to their family and refuses to speak with her. She hasn’t spoken to her sister in years. Mom can’t abandon her children, so she is rekindling a relationship with Brittany. This is a major point of contention between Ashley and Becky.

According to Ty, (Becky’s husband) Ashley is downright co-dependent. She calls his wife about any challenge, inconvenience, shred of gossip or observation and it’s too much. Because they live so close to one another and have keys to one another’s houses there have been issues with unannounced drop ins that the husbands are not fans of. When Ty first met Becky about fifteen years ago, the closeness between the two ladies was cute, even endearing, but 15 years later, with Ashley being in her mid-thirties, Ty admits he finds the relationship concerning. Additionally, he believes Becky needs to draw up some boundaries and decline a few of Ashley’s hourly phone calls. (That’ll never happen!)

Ty’s not the only man who has qualms with their closeness. Ashley’s husband Matt, 33, often feels like he’s in a relationship with both Ashley and Becky and it feels like too much. Anytime there’s a fight in the house, Ashley goes ahead and calls Becky to weigh in. He wants separation between their family units. He wants his own wife, his own traditions his own routines. In short, he wants some healthy separation. He already must deal with his wife co-parenting with a former lover, and he has to raise another man’s child, but to have to also be so close to his mother-in-law? It’s a big ask.

For Ashley, both of her pregnancies were completely unplanned and surrounded by drama. She never had a chance to have a planned pregnancy, and it’s something she’s always wanted to give to her mother. Only one problem: Matt is not on board… yet. He’s not sure if he wants more children or not. Additionally, Ashley doesn’t handle pregnancy well. She is hormonal and volatile. On top of that, Matt is terrified that they might have twins again, but Ashley is desperate for another child as she nears her mid-thirties. Every day, in between phone calls to her mother, Ashley makes sure to ask Matt if he’s ready for Baby Number Three and each day, he declines. Still, she’s determined to wear him down – and she hopes her mother will pitch in with the efforts! Becky would love for Ashley to have another baby and is desperate to have a pregnancy without the drama now that Ashley is properly married.

Beyond this, Ashley’s made it a priority to work on her own marriage since she claims it was off to a rocky start with the unplanned pregnancy and would love to renew her vows with Matt. He would agree that their relationship wasn’t always easy, but they’re in a better place than they once were. Of course, a vow renewal ceremony would include mom! Ashley loves tradition and family and recently, to spice things up in her life she had a boudoir photo shoot. Mom was there to help her naked daughter find the right sexy poses for the camera. Ashley is actively encouraging mom to do the same for her husband! She’s sexy, so why not?!

When Ashley isn’t with mom or raising her boys, she’s part owner in a hair salon! She loves the small-town gossip and active buzz that comes along with a salon. And yes, she styles her mom’s hair! Managing family, marriage and a relationship with mom AND a salon is a lot of work, so Ashley is constantly pulled in 100 different directions. She copes by taking time away with her mama of course. Ashley has big plans for the salon and eventually wants to expand be a bigger share owner in the business.

Years ago, Ashley and Becky were asked to participate in a study by the Berkley Psychic Institute. They were studying psychic phenomena in mother and daughter duos. At the time Becky was hesitant to expose her daughter to the study for fear of ridicule and harm for her young daughter. However, as adults, Ashley and Becky no longer want to keep their abilities hidden. They are interested in reaching out to the institute to answer questions about their abilities. Is there really a special connection that can be proven between mom’s and daughters. This duo wants to find out!
