Double Trouble

Anita and Darby are an incredibly close, loud, colorful and down-right bizarre mom and daughter duo! They share just about every aspect of their lives together; from the same job (mobile dog grooming!) to kicking their fiancé’s out of bed so that they can sleep together, to planning a double wedding! That’s right, mom and daughter are saying, “I do!” and they’re planning to walk down the aisle, side by side… Much to the chagrin of their fiancés! Darby and Anita think that it’ll be a special day that will solidify their anniversary for years to come but others think that it’ll be a fiasco that will end in a family feud! Either way, this mom and daughter won’t let anything or anyone get in the way of their super close relationship.

Darby lives with her fiancé, Hale (23), in Las Vegas and Anita lives with her beau, Chuck (58), in San Leon, Texas. Anita would love for Darby to move back to South Texas so she could be closer to her, but Hale and his family would not support the move. The distance is excruciating for the couple…BUT they still find a way to see each other as often as possible. Anita spends at least a week a month in Las Vegas and Darby spends a week a month in South Texas with her mom. Darby has been known to fly as often as three times a month to visit mom in Texas. Darby recently welcomed her daughter, Nova (2.5 months), and loves taking her daughter to see her mom as often as possible. 

When the duo isn't together, they are in constant contact. Anita bought her dream house in San Leon last year which she has named "Mermaid Manor." She fills her home, located two blocks away from the beach, with mermaids, boas and anything with glitter! When they visit each other, they like to sleep in bed together with Darby's daughter, Nova. For Anita, sleeping with Nova reminds her of sleeping with Darby when she was a baby and she loves that she gets to carry on the tradition of the girls sleeping in bed with her. Darby and Anita have slept in the same bed since Darby was a baby. When together they plan all of their excursions jointly, from doctor appointments to shopping to hair and nails, to stopping by the pet store. They spend every moment side-by-side. Unfortunately, it causes some family issues, because Darby doesn’t tell her sister, Demi, that she’ll be visiting. Demi then feels left out that mom and Darby are hanging out without her. Demi finds their relationship odd and feels that Darby is too old to be acting like mom’s little girl.

They spend much of their time apart on the phone together and have to do a call right before bed to “say goodnight.” Darby will ignore calls from her fiancé, Hale if she is on the phone with her mom, which drives Hale crazy. Anita and Darby share the same “unusual” interests like their favorite animals being “hairless” and Anita’s hairless dog, Ava, takes center stage and gets a lot of attention when they are together. Anita has 11 chickens, but her favorite one has a hairless neck! Hale often feels like a third-wheel and neglected in his relationship. He either has to take care of his kids and work back at home in Vegas when his wife is away, or he feels like he’s being left out when Darby and Anita are together. Matt, Darby’s dad and Anita’s ex-husband has found an unlikely friendship with Hale. The two confide in one another about the challenges being in a relationship with Darby and Anita. 

But in happier news, wedding bells are going to chime! Anita and Darby are in the process of picking a date for their wedding day. They want to get married by "Elvis" at the infamous Little White Wedding Chapel. Darby and Anita are excited to go wedding dress shopping and wedding cake testing together so they can plan their "dream wedding day." Darby is excited that her and her mother will be able to celebrate their anniversary together every year! Hale, Darby’s husband is only mildly tolerating the idea of double wedding. However, he isn’t pleased about sharing his honeymoon with his mother in law. After all, what groom wants to spend their first night as husband and wife next-door to the bride’s mom?

Matt, Darby’s father and Anita’s ex-husband will also be in attendance with his current wife Melissa. Melissa avoids Anita like the plague. The two don’t get along, but Anita can’t tell Matt that Melissa isn’t welcome. The ex-in-law disdain goes both ways: Matt doesn’t like Anita’s fiancé Chuck. The two can’t be in the same room together without a blow-out fight. Matt has to be there for his daughter’s wedding, but he didn’t sign up to be there for his ex-wife’s wedding! And just who will walk Darby down the aisle? Matt thinks that Anita and Darby’s relationship is co-dependent and inappropriately close. He thinks that it stems from the problematic way in which Anita was raised by her mother. Ultimately, Matt thinks that Anita is a poor role model for his daughter and that they enable each other to make poor decisions.

As for the rest of the family…They aren’t sure what to make of Darby and Anita and especially an upcoming wedding. Some think it’s weird. Some inappropriate. And some shrug it off as, “that makes sense for Darby and Anita.” Either way, it will be a fun yet cringe-worthy event.

Anita has owned a mobile dog grooming business called, "Anita Groomer" for the past thirty years. She has a purple van adorned with her company's logo, a purple poodle. From the time Darby was a kid, she would always join her mom for her grooming jobs. The pair say that they are a great team when it comes to grooming dogs and they are the ultimate duo because they work so well together. Darby wants to follow in her mother's footsteps and start her own dog grooming business in Las Vegas. Darby plans to spend some more time in San Leon with her mom to refine her dog grooming skills so she will feel comfortable stepping out on her own and opening her own business. Whether it’s a wedding, marital issues, taking care of un-coiffed pooches; this mom and daughter are nothing short of humor, drama and loads of inappropriate closeness.
