Mother - Amy (44)
Daughter - Carina (23)
Kailua, (Oahu) Hawaii
Mother Duck & Duckling
Spunky, funky and chock-full of fun; meet Amy and Carina, a mainlander transplant mom and daughter duo living life on their own terms along the sunny shores of Hawaii. Mom is an over-the-top, irreverent, never-met a stranger kinda lady with a soft spot for animals. Daughter, Carina hopelessly idolizes her mother, so much so that she walks, talks and dresses like her larger-than-life mama. The duo has lived all over the country together because Amy's ex-husband Danny was in the Navy. By the time Carina graduated high school she had attended sixteen schools! Her extremely close bond with mom was the only, “constant” in her life. Now, Danny and Amy are separated (they haven’t been together for ten years) so mom and daughter decided to call Hawaii home.
Amy and Carina opt to share a bedroom in their bungalow-style home in the picturesque town of Kailua. Even though they have enough room to each have their own room, they have to be together all of the time, so they therefore share a room and a bed. Every night they prepare for sleep by watching their soaps together in bed in their matching pajamas. Although they start their night fully clothed, Carina and/or Amy end-up in the nude by the morning. Along with sharing a bed, they also share clothing…and even more strange than clothing, they share underwear! Despite not being exact matching sizes, they’ll see their “intimates” as fair game and whoever needs a pair, can spare a pair!
Amy and Carina think that the sides of their faces are symmetrical and that you if look at both of their faces from the same side it appears to be an exact match! Not only do they look alike, they also sound alike! If they’re on the phone the line between who’s speaking is always confused. More often than not mom will pretend to be Carina when making important phone calls or helping to get her daughter out of awkward social situations.
Amy and Danny have a son together named Cameron. He’s 15 years old, 6'1” and 230 pounds! Danny works as a truck driver on the mainland, earning money to support Carina, Amy and Cameron. Danny would do just about anything for his family and therefore works all of the time to support them. He even supports all the crazy businesses, trips and ideas that they come up with.
Amy and Carina are obsessed with animals and especially birds. They have a cockatoo named Loma, two Great Danes named Montebello and Hollywood and their three rescue ducks named Stevie, Pancake and Albert. Yes, mom and daughter have matching ducks that sit on their shoulder as they do work around their house. Amy and Carina volunteer with a local duck rescue so they always have ducks coming in and out of their house. They have a long list of daily chores that they do together to keep their full house running in tip-top shape. Hilarity always ensues when things invariably go awry.
Carina and Amy also own a pop-up restaurant/food stand called, “My Balls” that serves delicious, Italian meatballs. They cater, take orders and have a weekly residency at the local farmer’s market. The "My Balls" booth is a crowd favorite because Amy and Carina try to bring a little slice of "Queens" by blasting music by "The Rat Pack" and treating their customers to their hilarious coordinated song and dance numbers. They eventually want to open their own restaurant employing other like-minded, cute and kooky ladies.
Carina is currently single and Amy couldn't be happier about that. Carina was dating Micah up until a couple of months ago. Micah is a go with the flow, easy-going Hawaiian native with dreadlocks and “give peace a chance” mentality. Micah and Carina were inseparable and incredibly in-love. That is, until Amy told her daughter to break up with him. Even though Amy was in love with Micah she ended it per her mom’s suggestion. Amy thinks that Micah is too small town, passive Hawaii boy with zero ambition. In short, although he’s sweet he’s a bad influence on her daughter who should instead aspire to make something of herself and not to settle for less. Micah and Carina still talk and flirt and have a friendship. Both Micah and Carina would love to still find a way to be together, but aren’t sure how with mom getting in the way. Can they really be friends when they feel strongly about one another? Or will they have to go behind mom’s back if Carina really doesn’t approve of their relationship? Will this drive a wedge in their picture-perfect mom and daughter relationship?
Amy is single and has dabbled in dating but finds it hard to meet men that are up to her standards. Amy admits that her close relationship with Carina is so fulfilling that it makes romantic relationships pale in comparison. From Carina, Amy gets the satisfaction of feeling like she has a companion and "partner in crime" that no man has been able to give her. Though Amy does still feels a close connection to her ex-husband Danny. In an ideal world, she would love for Danny to come and live with them. Danny thinks that it will be a bad idea and they will all quickly learn the reasons why they weren’t a good couple to begin with. What’s more Danny feels his place is as the provider and needs to focus on making money to support the family. Danny admits that he isn’t good at being vulnerable and emotional. He can’t make heads or tails of their relationship and thinks he would just get in the way and ruin everything. Still, Amy doesn’t agree and thinks that Danny should be closer and bigger part of their life in Hawaii.
Two moms, two ducks and two ex’s that might be something more? Amy and Carina have a strange and treacherous road ahead navigating their romantic and family lives all while trying to find their career path in the world. Carina is currently in school to be a pilot and is excited about taking a completely unexpected career path. Carina and Amy's unbreakable bond is something that both need to survive. They are each other's soulmates and feel like as long as they have each other no matter what life throws at them; they will be okay. It’s anyone’s call as to how the sun will set on their story, so why not pour a Mai Tai and pull up a seat in the meantime?
